Behemoth - preview & May 2022 update

behemoth May 30, 2022

Heya!

Got some juicy updates for our little big Rhino. 🦏🏰

Quick summary

  • Game design is progressing great. I had a couple of minor breakthroughs that I'm really happy about - more below.
  • As anticipated, the Kickstarter game launch will be postponed. I was originally aiming for October 2022 - I am now targeting 2023, hopefully in the Spring.

Longer Version

Sharing some insights on current game rules - all subject to potential changes 😉

Action points as the core engine

After a number of iterations, I have found a nice balance in driving actions through simple action points. This allows for an intuitive first game, while allowing for a nice learning curve to develop some strategy.

Character Growth

Rangers control a companion Beast. Each comes with some set ability levels, which can be grown throughout the game. The level in a given ability directly affects how well you can execute your basic actions.

This allows for variability and a nice sense of accomplishment.

Adaptive AI

Nyx, the ancient Goddess of Shadow, adapts to Rangers behaviour by tracking the resources spent by the players.

I'm particularly happy with this design as it's very low maintenance but allows for such a deep experience.

End of the sneak preview for now!

Is there some of these mechanics that sound interesting or exciting to you?

I will keep sharing more as I progress with the design.

Speak soon, and happy gaming!
